Haleakala Maui & the Power of Sunrise
I drove across the island in the dead of night. The road was narrow and pitch black as I began the slow, steep, winding ascent to the summit of Haleakalā Maui to watch the sunrise above the clouds.
Driving a hire car (on the wrong side of the road for me) made the journey even more intense, concentrating on every bend as the road curled higher into the darkness.
I reached the summit as dawn began to break, surrounded by an ethereal, almost otherworldly landscape.
A fluffy white blanket of clouds floated around the crater’s edge, and a glowing light began to brighten the sky. Standing at the summit of the mountain felt like standing on the edge of the earth.
As the sunrise approached, the clouds turned soft pink, gold and orange, reflecting the shifting light.

The Power of Sunrise
More people had gathered behind me as dawn approached. The air was crisp and cold and I shivered as I stood at the edge of the crater watching the changing light on the mountain.
Being so far above the clouds, surrounded by such vastness, created a sense of space I rarely experience in everyday life. For a few moments, everything felt still.
As the sunlight moved across the crater, it revealed the stark beauty of the volcanic landscape. I felt the light of the sun on my face and drew its warmth inward as as I watched the light unfold across Haleakalā.
The Energy of Haleakala Maui
A place of powerful energy, Haleakalā has long held deep spiritual and cultural significance for Native Hawaiians. Its name means “House of the Sun,” and the summit is part of a living cultural landscape.
More recent Earth-energy theories offer another way of thinking about the landscape’s power alongside these Indigenous traditions. In Robert Coon’s Earth Chakra system, Haleakalā is the Planetary Fire Spinner Wheel, one of the Earth’s major energetic nodes within a network of ley lines or currents believed to flow around the Earth.
It represents Heart Fire, bringing together the qualities of the heart, love, compassion and emotional healing, with the raw, passionate energy of volcanic fire.
As a Spinner Wheel, Haleakalā is a place where energy is gathered, transformed and distributed. High above the clouds, the mountain receives the light of the sun, while volcanic fire rises from deep within the Earth – a meeting of light and fire. At Haleakalā, these energies are transformed and radiated outward along the Earth’s ley lines.
Other writers, including William Becker, Beth Hagens and Melissa Alvarez, have explored Haleakalā within broader ideas of planetary energy grids, sacred sites and Earth chakras.
These traditions offer another way of understanding why certain landscapes can feel so powerful and restorative. For me, whether we think of it as energy or simply the profound effect of being immersed in nature, there is something about places like Haleakalā that creates space to become still, reconnect and see things differently.
That combination of earth, sky, light and stillness shaped my Haleakalā Sonic Earth Journey, part of a growing collection of Sonic Earth Journeys inspired by the landscapes that have moved me throughout my travels.
Creating the Haleakalā Sonic Earth Journey
I hoped to capture the awe and wonder of watching a Haleakalā sunrise in the guided meditation, the surreal volcanic landscape, the feeling of floating above the clouds and the beauty of the changing light as dawn unfolded across Haleakalā Maui.
The Haleakala Meditation — A Journey Inward
The 20-minute meditation begins at the summit of Haleakalā before descending into the lush rainforest below, a world of towering trees, birdsong, streams and waterfalls. The stark, barren mountain and the abundant life of the forest become part of one continuous journey, a reflection of life’s contrasts: stillness and movement, emptiness and growth, darkness and light.
Natural sounds are woven into the meditation to bring the landscape to life and create a more immersive experience.
As the summit of Haleakalā was still and silent, I created original music to evoke the atmosphere of sunrise on the mountaintop. Tuned to 432 Hz, the music is designed to align with the natural world.
Vocal tones and interweaving melodic parts are layered over a low drone. A slow medicine drum beat evokes the steady presence of the mountain, a quiet, living pulse that grounds and centres the meditation as the light unfolds.
The Haleakalā Soundscape
The accompanying 30-minute Haleakalā Soundscape takes you deeper into Maui’s natural world, with field recordings of rainforest, birds, streams, waterfalls and the coastline.
After the stark volcanic landscape of the summit, the lush vitality of the island’s forests and coastline offers a contrasting experience that is restorative, immersive and alive.
Together, the meditation and soundscape offer two different ways to experience Haleakalā and Maui: the meditation takes you on a guided journey from mountain to forest, inspired by the beauty of sunrise, while the soundscape invites you to simply immerse yourself in the natural sounds of the island.
A Companion for Your Solo Journey
You don’t have to be in Maui to need a little light in your life.
Solo travel can bring moments of anxiety, homesickness or feeling ungrounded. Sometimes you simply need a quiet space to pause, reconnect with yourself and find your centre.
The Haleakalā Sonic Earth Journey was created as a companion for those moments, something you can return to when you need stillness, perspective or encouragement.
It offers a way to travel to Haleakalā through sound, music and guided imagery, and to carry something of the experience with you, wherever you are in the world.
You can listen while travelling, after a long day exploring, or at home when you want to reconnect with the feeling of standing above the clouds as the first light of dawn touched Haleakalā.
I’ve been travelling solo for more than 30 years, and many of the places I’ve encountered along the way have shaped the way I see the world and changed my perspective on life.
For me, this is part of what makes solo female travel transformative: the opportunity to step outside everyday life, experience somewhere completely different and return with a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Take the Light With You
The sun rises and the moment passes, but the feeling can stay with you.
Perhaps that is one of the gifts of travel. It changes where we are, how we see, and often, how we feel.
And we always carry something of the places we’ve visited with us, in our memories and in the moments that stay with us long after we’ve gone.
Take a little of that light with you.
