My Experience
Of all the islands I visited near Cairns, Fitzroy Island was my favourite. I travelled with Fitzroy Island Adventures and had around six hours to explore after arriving on the morning ferry from Cairns.
What stood out most was the island’s natural beauty. The combination of rainforest, beaches and clear water makes it easy to spend an entire day exploring at your own pace. Despite being a popular destination, the island feels spacious, and it’s easy to find a quiet spot away from the crowds.

I visited on a Green Island Fly & Cruise package which included a scenic Reef Hopper flight over the Great Barrier Reef, a ferry transfer to the island, lunch and snorkelling.
The scenic reef flight was a highlight of the experience, providing incredible aerial views of the reef and island before landing back in Cairns to board the ferry. The combination of flying, snorkelling and exploring the island made for a memorable day and a great introduction to this UNESCO World Heritage-listed cay.

Located off the coast of Port Douglas, the Low Isles are one of the best reef day trips from Cairns for snorkelling, turtle spotting and experiencing the Great Barrier Reef in a relaxed setting. My Experience
A shuttle bus took us from the visitor centre to the start of the trail, where we crossed a suspension bridge and followed the path through dense rainforest to the river. The walk eventually opened up to a beautiful waterfall and swimming area surrounded by towering trees.
I visited Mossman Gorge as part of a guided Daintree tour from Cairns. The gorge was one of the standout stops, with stunning scenery and excellent access via boardwalks and well-designed walking tracks.
We spent around 45 minutes exploring Mossman Gorge, though there are longer walking tracks if you want to venture further into the rainforest. I would have loved more time here, but the tour schedule meant we had to continue on to other Daintree highlights.

7. Kuranda
Kuranda is one of the most popular day trips from Cairns and offers an easy way to experience the UNESCO World Heritage-listed rainforests in the area. Located around 29 kilometres (about 40 minutes) from Cairns, it is much closer and more accessible than the Daintree Rainforest, making it a great option for a relaxed rainforest experience.
Famous for its Senic Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Kuranda is a charming rainforest village with markets, wildlife attractions and excellent views of Barron Falls, which is especially impressive during the wet season.
The Skyrail Cableway glides over the rainforest canopy and takes around 1.5 hours one way, with two stops along the route where you can walk through the forest and enjoy views of waterfalls and the surrounding gorge. The historic Kuranda Scenic Railway takes around 2 hours and also offers spectacular views, including a stop overlooking Barron Falls.
Once in Kuranda Village, you’ll find markets, cafés, souvenir shops and wildlife attractions such as the butterfly sanctuary, koala gardens and bird parks.

My Experience
I’ve visited Kuranda twice and experienced it in different ways. The first time, I travelled up on the Skyrail and returned on the Scenic Railway, which gave me two very different perspectives of the rainforest.
While the journey itself was the highlight, I found Kuranda Village quite touristy, especially around the station and markets. That said, it’s still a pleasant place to spend a few hours, and I particularly enjoyed the butterfly sanctuary.
On another visit, I took a more budget-friendly option by bus. While it was cheaper, it limited flexibility for the return journey, so I had less time to explore the village.

8. Atherton Tablelands
The Atherton Tablelands waterfalls are some of the most spectacular swimming spots in Tropical North Queensland. Located around an hour inland from Cairns, this rainforest-covered plateau is home to lush scenery, natural swimming holes and some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the region.
Most of the best waterfalls are spread across the rainforest, including Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie Falls and Ellinjaa Falls, making this area ideal for a scenic road trip or guided tour. Without a car, it can be difficult to reach independently, so many travellers choose a day tour from Cairns.

My Experience
I explored the Atherton Tablelands on a guided day trip with Cairns Adventure Group. It turned out to be one of my favourite experiences in the region, with a full day of swimming, waterfalls and rainforest scenery.
Lake Eacham was a highlight. The water was cool, clear and deeper than expected, and I swam out to a jetty before walking back through the surrounding rainforest. Millaa Millaa Falls and Josephine Falls were equally stunning, with lush green surroundings and powerful cascades.
At Josephine Falls, our guide explained how to safely enjoy the natural rock slide. I gave it a try, swimming across the pool and climbing the rockface to reach the top before sliding down into the water below.
We ended the day at Babinda Boulders, a calm rainforest swimming spot surrounded by tall trees and sandy riverbanks. It was the perfect place to relax, swim and enjoy afternoon tea before heading back to Cairns.

9. Port Douglas
Port Douglas is a relaxed coastal town about an hour north of Cairns, set between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest it makes a lovely day trip from Cairns. Port Douglas has a laid-back, tropical atmosphere with palm-lined streets, boutique resorts and a scenic beachfront.
It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a slower-paced coastal escape with excellent dining, a marina precinct and easy access to some of Tropical North Queensland’s most iconic attractions, including Mossman Gorge, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

On my last visit, I stayed in a self-contained apartment in Port Douglas and spent time exploring at a slower pace. I enjoyed walking along Four Mile Beach at sunrise, browsing boutiques along Macrossan Street and experiencing the town’s cafés and historic pubs.
As a solo traveller, I also appreciated the relaxed atmosphere, although the lack of public transport meant I relied more on organised tours and shuttle services to get around.
Port Douglas, is an excellent bases for reef trips, but the experience is slightly different to Cairns. Port Douglas tends to offer smaller, more boutique-style reef tours, including trips to Low Isles, which was a highlight for me.

Access to Port Douglas is via shuttle bus or private transfer from Cairns, as there is no public transport in the area. This can make getting around more expensive and less convenient without a car.

10. Palm Cove
Palm Cove is an upmarket beachside village just outside Cairns, known for its palm-lined beach, boutique shops and relaxed resort atmosphere. It’s a popular spot for a slow-paced day by the water or a coastal lunch with ocean views.
Although it’s closer to Cairns, Palm Cove feels more exclusive and peaceful, with a strong focus on resorts, fine dining and beachfront relaxation. It’s also a scenic stop on the drive between Cairns and Port Douglas, along one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal roads.

My Experience
I visited Palm Cove as a day trip from Cairns and went for lunch by the beach. I took the public bus, which took around an hour and was very affordable.
I spent the afternoon walking along the palm-lined promenade, browsing a few boutique shops and enjoying the coastal scenery. It’s a beautiful place to unwind, with a calm and polished feel compared to Cairns.
While Palm Cove is ideal for relaxation, it is very quiet, and there is less to do here than in other nearby destinations. It’s best suited to travellers who want a slow beach day rather than a packed itinerary.
Longer Day Trips From Cairns
Mission Beach
Mission Beach is a quiet coastal town about 2.5–3 hours south of Cairns. While it is possible as a long day trip, it’s better suited to an overnight stay or road trip stop.
It’s known for its long, palm-fringed beaches and relaxed atmosphere, and it’s one of the closest mainland access points to Dunk Island and the Great Barrier Reef’s southern sections.
Best for:
Travellers with more time looking for a quiet beach escape or road trip stop.
My experience
I stopped off at Mission Beach on my way to Magnetic Island near Townsville, travelling by Premier bus and staying overnight.
While I enjoyed the long stretch of quiet beach and relaxed atmosphere, there wasn’t a huge amount to do without a car. I had also hoped to visit Dunk Island, but the water taxi wasn’t running at the time. It has since resumed services, but during my visit access was limited, which reduced the options for exploring the area.
It felt like a peaceful stopover, but overall, it works best when you have your own transport.
